Teaching objectives:Students will be able to
1.identify attributive clauses by learning the basic structure in a compound sentence;
choose proper relative pronouns or adverbs to begin attrbutive clauses.
2.read a brief travel guide to get some information on the introduced tourists sites;
write some complex sentences with attributive clauses which give additional information about certain part of the sentences; work out a short passage to introduce some place of interest using the nouns of locality.
3.get grammar rules by observing and studying some typical examples on their own;
use attributive clauses willingly to describe the characteristics of an object better;
enhance the knowledge and understandinng of the culture of English-speaking countries by learning the history of the famous tourist sites in London.


Teaching contents:
1.Topic:      Tourist sites in London
2.New words:    tour, mummy, duke, attack, surround, prince,
          the House of Commons, the House of Lords, Big Ben
3.Key structure: attributive clauses which begin with relative pronouns such as
         who, whose, which and that or relative adverbs such as where and when.

Ask about the capital of the UK and show the pictures of the famous tourist sites in London , getting the Ss to recognize them.

1. Get the Ss to read the 1st and 3rd paragraphs carefully and answer the following questions:
1) How many visitors come to the British Museum every year? Why ?
2) What is the most famous symbol of London?
2. Let the Ss to read the 2nd and 4th paragraphs carefully and tell True of False:
1) Buckingham Palace has a long history of over 3,000 years.
2) Buckingham Palace was built for the ruler of the UK in the 18th century.
3)The Buckinghams has moved out of Buckingham Palace.
4) Prince Charles and Lady Diana got married in the Buckingham Palace.

 

1.Present all the compound sentences according to which the students answer the above questions and let them observe what kind of structure the sentences share;
2.Show some simple sentences describing the same character or site but with attributive clauses removed in column 1 and ask if they are complete sentences;
3.Present the sentences which share the same content as the attributive clauses in column 2 and get the students to match them with the sentences in column 1;
4.While checking the answer, let the students observe how the two simple sentences are joined together into one complex by the relative pronouns ;
5.Finish exe 2.4 on page 65.
6.Ask the Ss to read “language contrast” by themselves and get to know the relationship between the noun and the clause?
7.How can nouns and attributive clauses be joined together? When should relative adverbs such as “when”and ”where” be used?
8.Do exe 2.5 on page 65.

1.Read the following simple sentences carefully and try to get complex sentences with attributive clause;
1 ) I like the picture. It was taken on my 15th birthday.
2 ) The principle gave the prize to the students. They made a great progress.
3 ) That is the boy. His leg was broken in the accident.

2 .Complete the sentences : write attributive clauses to give additional information about the nouns;
1) Up ahead are the Houses of Parliament _________________________________.
2) Peter is an English teacher _____________________________________.

3. Group work: show a picture of Tian’anmen Square and some useful expressions; each group cooperate to write a few sentences about a famous building on the square according to the provided information; they are required to use attributive clauses as often as possible.

 

Suppose you are a tourist guide. Write a short passage to introduce Tian’anmen Square.
